Richard Mansfield

Winery Consultant Richard Mansfield comes to us with nearly 30 years of winemaking experience in both the Old World and the New.  The fruits of his labors are no strangers to the pages of Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, and many a medal decorates bottles produced by him.  His experience covers many varietals, organic and conventional viticulture, as well as the specialty wines produced from Botrytis-affected grapes. Throughout the years Richard has maintained a deep commitment to quality. 



Classically trained in European winemaking techniques as well as a degree in Chemistry from the University of Oregon, Richard began his formal wine education by a full apprenticeship under a master winemaker in Germany followed by a full University-level course of studies in Viticulture and Enology at Germany’s famed institute in Geisenheim.   In the mid-80s he came to Oregon, where he gained experience in the production of ultra-premium Pinot Noir.  As Winemaker, General Manager, and part owner of two ultra-premium boutique wineries, Garden Valley and Callahan Ridge, he found a niche in the small-scale production of quality wine with domestic and international distribution.  In the mid-90s he sold his share in the Oregon Wineries, ventured southward, and settled in our own Napa Valley as Assistant Winemaker at Stags’ Leap Winery.  He soon returned to his passion of starting small, quality-driven wineries and founded Bradford Mountain Winery in the Dry Creek Valley  In addition, he launched the “Floodgate Vineyard” label while at Bradford Mountain Winery, where he explored Alsatian-style varietals as well as Anderson Valley Pinot noir.  After a series of successful award-winning vintages, he moved back to Napa to become the operations winemaker at Palmaz Vineyards, a winery with over 80,000 square feet of under-ground caves.

For the past two years he has turned his interests toward assisting small wineries achieve their production quality goals through consulting as owner of Vincon Enological Services.  After nearly three decades in the industry, he has designed and created seven award-winning wineries, with a knowledge base covering the process from root to bottle.  Richard’s ultimate passion is the production of award-winning, premium wines.  He is truly a committed and knowledgeable professional, with a diverse background.  He delights in educating both the fledgling and seasoned winemaker.  We at Kings Hill Cellars are privileged to have his talent in our midst.
